The "Sab cat" or "Sabo Tabby" was the creation of IWW artist and labor activist, Ralph Chaplin. The act of sabotage has long been a controversial subject among advocates for workers' rights. In Chaplin's words, "[the] 'Sab Cat' was supposed to symbolize the 'slow down' as a means of 'striking on the job.'" Though to some, "sabotage" meant taking direct action a step further, extending to more radical measures like acts of vandalism and destruction of company property.

In turn, the "Sab Cat" has been unofficially appropriated and used as a mascot among so-called "radical organizations" (e.g. anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists) whose idea of sabotage went beyond measures deemed acceptable by the UWW.

To this day, the IWW has kept the Sab cat at arms length, maintaining that it "does not condone or endorse such use of the black cat to symbolize sabotage itself." Regardless of how its parent organization feels about its most infamous mascot, it's hard to deny the impact and legacy the Sab cat has left behind.
